Joey, Chapter 1

Hector
I woke up with a smile on my face. I could hear birds chirping. Today was going to be a good day. It was my first day working at Medtronic. The road to this moment had been long. In the past year I had broken up with my boyfriend, quit my job and moved back home to Kentucky from Philadelphia. I had lived in my parents’ basement and wallowed for a while, until I got the courage to start applying for jobs. This hadn’t turned out to be easy. Because my parents lived in Paducah, Kentucky, there weren’t many jobs on offer that really suited me. I tried Louisville, Memphis, St. Louis, but I didn’t find a job opening that got me excited. My work experience was in health care IT, and I wasn’t finding what I was looking for. I had no choice but to make my job search a national project. I found myself having several options to choose from.

I got out of bed and opened the blinders. Naked, I walked to the kitchen and made myself some breakfast and coffee. Only last Thursday had I finally arrived here in Sarasota, Florida, after driving my stuff down here from Kentucky. I had been exhausted. After a quiet weekend, I now felt ready to give it my all on my first workday. This past weekend it had been a beautiful 85 degrees (29 Celsius) and I had made use of the apartment pool both days. It was the kind of weather I could get used to. Back in Paducah it had been a rainy 45 degrees (7 Celsius), and somehow that made it even better.

Once I had finished my breakfast, I walked to the bathroom and turned on the shower. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I was starting to feel awake and energized. I picked out my nicest outfit to make a good impression on the co-workers. Although I had done all of the online research about the company that I could, the interviews had been over Skype. This meant I had yet to see the office, and I couldn’t wait. I took a second coffee in my to-go mug with me to the car. I closed the apartment door and couldn’t help but smile when I looked at the blue skies.

In my blue 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV I put some music on and turned on the navigation. I drove out of my apartment parking lot and had to wait for traffic before I could turn left. Then I was finally on my way for my first work commute. I knew to turn left at the first traffic lights onto South Beneva Road. Immediately getting into a quieter area of town, I knew I had to go straight ahead for a while. I sang along to the music.

When I crossed the railroad, I knew it wasn’t long until the large intersection where I had to turn right onto Fruitville Road. Then it was only a short while on the 780. I didn’t really remember when to take the left turn onto North Cattlemen Road, so I relied on my navigation for that. Once I had made that turn and drove along the various office buildings, I suddenly started to get a little nervous. I realized this was my first and best opportunity to make friends in Sarasota.

After the first bend, but before the second, I turned right onto the parking lot. I knew it was the building to my left. There were still loads of parking spaces. I calmly parked and turned off the engine. I checked my brown hair in the rear-view mirror and scratched my beard. I took a last sip of my coffee. I took a deep breath as I checked my phone. 13 minute commute. Very good. I tried to shake off the nerves and got out of the car. I looked at the three-story building and took another deep breath. I tried to look confident as I walked in.

I reported at the security desk and said it was my first day. Behind the desk sat a man who was black, bald, and built like a bodybuilder. His uniform fit tightly around his large chest and shoulders. He looked hot as hell. The guy shook my hand and introduced himself as Craig. He made me a key card and wished me good luck on my first day. I felt very welcome. I took the elevator to the 3rd floor.

I walked into an open plan office space with a reception desk right in front of me. I introduced myself to a young, Asian-looking guy, possibly an intern, and said it was my first day. He said his name was Ted Ling and welcomed me to the office. I asked him where I could find Daniel, the guy who hired me.
“Just a second, I’ll let him know you’re here.”

I looked around the office. Ceiling, walls, pillars, and desks were all white. The grey and blue carpet floors somehow stole all of the attention, and not in a good way. I could see into two conference rooms, which had glass walls.

Daniel
“Hector Carmona!”
I heard my name and turned around to see Daniel Abbott, with whom I’d had two of my three Skype interviews. On my laptop screen I had found him very charismatic, with the few strands of gray in his dark hair, his light stubble, and his beaming, confident smile. In person, he was just as charming, though shorter and thinner than I had imagined. He was about 5’9’’, making me one inch taller.
“So nice to finally meet you”, I said as we shook hands.
“Likewise. And welcome to the office. I hope you’ll feel at home here.”

Daniel led me to one of the conference rooms and asked me if I wanted anything to drink. I decided to have one more coffee.
“Great, I’ll be right back.”

In a few minutes he came back with two coffees and a young, blond woman who was clearly working her rack in her pantsuit.
“This is Lisa McRae, HR.”
“Hi! It is so nice to meet you”, she said with a slow Southern drawl.
We shook hands. The contract was put in front of me as the three of us sat at the table. I had already had a digital copy sent via e-mail, but I checked it to be sure before I signed.
“Welcome to the team”, Lisa said once I did.
Both her and Daniel shook my hand a second time.

After a short introduction to working at Medtronic, Daniel gave me a tour of the office. I shook hands with about 20, 25 people and very quickly forgot their names. Daniel then showed me to my cubicle. I was introduced to Marie Dalton in the next cubicle over, an African American woman with curly hair to her shoulders. I estimated her to be in her 40s. She was about 5’6’’ and slightly heavy set.
“This is Marie, she’ll guide you through your first workday. Marie, this is Hector!”
“Ah, reinforcements, finally!”, she said as we shook hands. “Joey and I have been running around trying to keep up with the high demand lately.”
“Well, I’m here!”, I said.
Daniel left me with Marie. She seemed very friendly and got me set up with my computer.

After getting my account and e-mail set up, Marie asked me about where I went to college and what had been my previous jobs, she told me about how she ended up with Medtronic and said she had been happy working here for 6 years now. Marie walked me around the office as well, giving me some more practical information. I tried to remember where each department was located and which people were important enough to have their own offices. Daniel was one of them.

Marie showed me the kitchen.
“Trust me, label everything you put in the fridge”, she said. I laughed. She showed me the coffee machine, which was very self-explanatory. And she showed me where the bathrooms were. We walked back with a drink in our hands. Marie showed me the online Medtronic catalog and helped me get acquainted with the machines they sell. At one point, she just let me familiarize myself with all of the products and went back to her own cubicle right next to mine.

Joey
At about 10:00 AM, I heard a male voice behind me.
“You must be the new guy!”
I turned around and saw a man, about 6’ tall. His facial features suggested a boyish youthfulness. His body was all man. He took off his suit jacket to reveal wide shoulders and a massive chest hiding underneath his blue and white plaid button down.
“Nice to meet you”, he said. “I’m Joey. Joey Lucciano.”
I shook his hand and for a second blanked on my own name.
“Hector. Carmona.”
“Welcome to Medtronic, has Marie been nice to you?”
“I’m always nice!”, I heard from the next cubicle over.
Joey faced me and laughed. I noticed that from the front his ears stick out from his head. There was something so cute and innocent about his face, but he looked sexy as hell.

Joey told me he just got back from a presentation to the MRI staff at St. Petersburg General Hospital, which must have been about an hour drive.
“Maybe you can join me on one of these one time, definitely helps with learning to give these yourself.”
“Sounds great!”, I said. I loved listening to him talk.
“If you need anything, I’m in the cubicle across”, he said as he walked away with his suit jacket and briefcase in his hand. His butt walked away from me in khakis and I couldn’t look away.

The rest of the week, I mainly worked closely with Marie as she was the most senior of our department. She was responsible for teaching me the ropes of my new job. She was very nice, funny, and patient. I definitely enjoyed working with her. When Marie was in a meeting or out on a presentation I would go to Joey with my questions. I felt like I clicked with him on a more personal level. We were about the same age. I was 30, Joey was 27. Yet I admired him. During lunch it was clear he was friends with pretty much all of the co-workers. He was popular. I thought he was very attractive, but I made sure not to act on anything. Besides not knowing his sexuality, I did not want an office romance this early on. I felt like I would be risking my job.

Marie also noticed Joey and I became quite close. On the Tuesday afternoon she asked me where my apartment was exactly. It felt like she was asking me this for a specific reason, but I hadn’t found it out yet.
“Bee Ridge Road.”
“I see. Is it just you? Roommates, girlfriend?”
“Just me.”
I smiled. I felt like I knew where she was going.
“So are you seeing anyone?”
“No, I broke up with my boyfriend in Philadelphia last year. Haven’t really been dating since.”
I figured I’d give her all of the information to save us time.

I noticed Marie had gone a little quiet after my answer.
“You’re such a nice young man, I’m sure you’ll find someone soon”, she eventually said.
“Aww, thanks!”
She looked at me and spoke softly.
“Listen. What I’m about to tell you is some office gossip you haven’t heard from me.”
She surprised me with this, both with her tone and the content.
“OK…”
“Joey is very sweet, very sexy, but that boy has slept with so many of the guys in this office…”
I’m quite sure my eyes widened and my mouth fell open. I didn’t dare gasp out loud.
“…you deserve better than that. That’s just what I think.”
She looked back at the computer screen. I smiled.
“Thanks.”
She typed something in the search bar that she wanted to show me.
“So, Joey’s gay then?”
“Wrong part of the story to focus on”, she said sternly.
I laughed.

Once my first workweek at Medtronic had finished, I was really happy with how things had gone. Sarasota was treating me well, the new job was challenging me but in a good way and I had nice co-workers. I was sad not to see Joey for two days. I thought about sending him a message, asking him to hang out. I even considered downloading Grindr again, to see if I could find him. In the end, he didn’t tell me about his sexuality and I don’t think he was aware of mine.

Over the weekend, it was cloudier than I had expected. At around 79 degrees (26 Celsius), it was still pleasant, but it rained a few times over the weekend. I spent it shopping for a few last things for my new apartment. On Friday, Joey had mentioned that a week from now the company softball team would be playing the local fire department. He asked me to join, he said the team desperately needed me. Of course I had said yes. I wanted to look good, so I looked up if there were any batting cages in the area. I found a place called Extra Innings which was close to the office, I went there Monday night after work and didn’t tell any of my co-workers.

My second week at work I was starting to feel more and more comfortable in the office. I was remembering people’s names and got to know them. However, I couldn’t help but focusing on Joey. Even after Marie’s warning, there was just something naturally charismatic about him that made me want to be near him. Sure, I checked out his ass whenever it came into my line of sight, but I wanted him to be my friend more than anything else.

Joey, on the other hand, slowly started to get more familiar with me. Slapping my back when I made a joke and touching my shoulder at times. When a few of us discussed the softball game during Friday lunch, he asked me if I worked out and squeezed my bicep and patted my flat stomach. With my 5’10’’ and 140 lbs, I was a joke compared to his 6’ and 200 lbs, but I appreciated the gesture. I was slim from cardio and dieting. He was beefy from lifting weights and eating lots of protein.

When the days turned into Sunday, I became excited and slightly nervous. Joey had offered to pick me up, as apparently the field was in Bee Ridge Park, which was about 3 minutes from my apartment. He lived further South. When I walked onto my apartment building’s parking lot, he was there at the agreed time. He had a green mid-sized car, which seemed a little old but somehow homey. He stood next to his car, leaning against it, wearing a blue T-shirt with the company name on it and white baseball pants. He also wore a white cap. I walked up to him from the side, and the tight pants only made his large rear look even bigger. He looked hot as hell. Daniel had given me the same uniform the Friday before, and I liked the way it looked on me, but Joey really stole the show.

“You look good!”, he said.
I smiled.
“Thanks, so do you!”

Joey drove out of the lot and turned right. At the lights he turned left on South Lockwood Ridge Road. It was a small and quiet road I hadn’t been on yet.
“It’s good to have a park so close to your apartment right?”, Joey said. “On a nice day, you could walk this in 15 minutes or so.”
“Yeah, it’s good to know!”

He went straight on for a few minutes and told me about the softball team.
“Like, it’s a fun group of people, but most of us aren’t any good at all. We barely practice. The fire department is top of the league, so it’s probably going to be a massacre.”
“Well, you guys have me now!”
Joey laughed.
“You’re making us have high expectations when you say things like that!”

Joey made a right turn onto Wilkinson Road and on the left side of the road I saw a sports field, empty. Were we the first people here? Right behind it was a parking lot, where Joey stopped the car. He was listing the people on the team.
“So it’s Daniel, Lisa from HR… you know Rebecca the secretary, right? Claire from accounting, Ted the receptionist… Craig from security… Edna and Faith from sales… and you and me.”
I already knew Marie didn’t take part in the team, as according to her she got her exercise in a different way. I was excited to see Craig outside of the office, he would probably look great in the uniform.

I thought we were going to the field by the road, but Joey said it was the field further down where I did see more people. We walked on a sandy road on the outside of the park where trees were providing shade. He asked me if I had done softball or baseball before. I lied and said I hadn’t touched a bat since high school, even though I had practiced this past Monday.

We met up with the others and it was very good to see everyone outside of the office. Ted was quite serious in the workplace, but looked happy, relaxed and quite cute in his uniform. Daniel was the team captain and looked equally attractive and self-secure on the field. With his T-shirt quite tight, I could tell his body was lean but muscular. A true sight for sore eyes though was Craig, who looked absolutely massive. Just like Joey, the pants were slightly too tight on him, revealing a beautifully round ass.

When we started getting warmed up, pitching a few balls, I could see why the team hadn’t been doing too well. Claire, Lisa and Rebecca were quite clearly here for the attention from some of the men in the office, mainly Craig, Daniel and Joey. Clearly not everyone knew about the latter. I also got some attention. When I told Claire her posture was slightly off and showed her how to swing the bat from behind, she made a joke about it and pushed her butt into my crotch.

Later, when it was Joey’s turn to practice a few hits, he asked me if he was doing it right.
“Your stance should be wider”, was my first reaction. “Shoulder-width apart.” Joey spread his legs further. Then I saw he wasn’t holding the bat correctly, so I walked over, and also showed him from behind, only realizing what I was doing when I felt his mammoth butt cheeks against my dick. I immediately started getting aroused. Some of the women woo-hoo’d from across the field. We both laughed. Though I could swear I saw Joey’s bulge get bigger too.

We lost to the fire department with 8-3. I had a great time though.

Joey drove me back home. I suggested the team get together next weekend to practice.
“I can’t, it’s the charity car wash.”
“What’s that?”
“Every December some of the employees do a charity car wash for cancer research. You should come!”
“You guys hang out a lot outside of the office!”
“I know, isn’t it great?”
