Chuck |
“How is he?”
“He looks sad”, I replied to Kala, who was driving.
We drove onto the grounds of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax. Kala and I got out of the car.
“You go in”, she said, “I’ll walk around with Duke for a bit”.
I walked to the entrance and waited for my turn at the reception desk.
“Good afternoon, how may I help you?”
“Hi, I… I’m looking for someone named Chuck, who was brought in not too long ago?”
“Let me see… Chuck Reid, head trauma?”
“Yeah.”
“Are you a friend or family?”
“No, I… I caused the accident.”
The woman’s friendly smile suddenly disappeared.
“I see. Would you please take a seat here?”
She gestured toward the waiting area. I sat down. Outside I could see Kala walk around with Duke.
I sat and waited for about 30 minutes. Some other people were picked up by people in scrubs. An older Latino man in blue scrubs and a labcoat walked up to the reception desk and the woman behind the desk pointed in my direction. The man, who I estimated to be in his late fifties, walked toward me.
“Are you here to see Mr Reid?”
I nodded.
“I’m Dr Martinez. Please walk with me”, he said. He had a friendly smile, which did nothing to alleviate my guilt.
As we walked through the hallway, he started talking.
“Let me start by saying that Mr Reid is going to be fine. Though he does have quite a heavy concussion. He woke up slightly dizzy and with quite a rough headache. So we gave him a sedative and we’re just going to keep him overnight for observation.”
A wave of relief went through my body.
“That’s great to hear”, I said.
“Now, I need to discuss something else with you. We reached out to Mr Reid’s family, but his parents in Chicago said he only recently moved here. Because we do not want him to drive home tomorrow, because he may still experience dizziness, I was hoping you could pick him up tomorrow.”
He had now stopped walking. I looked up at him.
“You came to the hospital to check on him and I can tell you feel guilty. And it was an accident, there really is no need for you to feel bad about it. And I get that is easier said than done. But driving him home tomorrow should relieve some of that guilt.”
I smiled.
“I’m sure it will.”
Dr Martinez then opened the door we were standing in front of.
“He’s probably going to be sleeping, but I wanted you to see that he’s OK.”
I looked into the room and saw a bed. I looked back at the doctor and he gestured for me to go in. I stepped into the room and saw Chuck laying in the bed, indeed sleeping. I heard the door close behind me. The doctor had left me alone with Chuck. I walked toward the bed and saw the black hair and scruffy beard. His eyes were closed and his mouth hung open like before. The bed covers reached up to his chest, which was bare. His defined, hairy pecs were quite the sight. Chuck was incredibly attractive. I hadn’t been able to see this earlier today, because I was still coming off a high from my date with Diego. His chest rose and fell in a slow but rhythmic pace. I sat next to him on a chair. Once I sat down, I felt ridiculous. I didn’t really know this guy. But I felt bad that he did not have anyone else to sit by him.
Once I sat down I saw the bandage on the back of his head. Again I felt a pang of guilt in my chest. I stood up to look at the bandage. That’s when I noticed Chuck’s body was moving. His left hand moved underneath the bed cover, and he used it to put it on his head.
“Ouch”, he softly moaned.
I froze in place.
I saw Chuck looking around, probably trying to figure out where he was. He then focused on me.
“Hey… you’re the hottie from the park!”
“Yes.”
“Sailesh, right?”
I was amazed he remembered my name.
“My head hurts so much, Sailesh, what happened? Where’s Duke?”
“Well, I… I threw a frisbee and it hit you in the head.”
He smiled.
“Really?”
He laughed out loud for a little while, but stopped as it probably made the pain worse.
“So if it’s OK with you, I can drive you home tomorrow? And I’ll look after Duke until then.”
“You would do that? That’s so nice!”
“Is there anything else I can do to make it up to you?”
He grabbed my hand, sat up, and looked me in the eye.
“You could go on a date with me”, he said without missing a beat.
“Uhm… well…
“Well…?”, he insisted.
“I…”
I wanted to explain to him I was really already seeing someone, but as I looked at him I saw his eyes crossing and his mouth fall open.
“Chuck, are you OK?”
His eyes rolled up and he fell back into the bed. A soft snoring came from his mouth. I realized his hand was still in mine, but it was all loose and heavy. I put his hand and arm by his side. He still looked so sexy to me as he laid there sleeping. I leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.
“I will see you tomorrow”, I said.
I walked out of the room.
That evening I walked Duke in my neighborhood. Mr Woodburn seemed fascinated and couldn’t stop petting him. I had bought a small bag of food for him, a toy, and a dog bed. I was going to make sure he had a nice stay at my place. I sent Diego a text, asking him if he had a nice day, because he would not believe the day I had had.
It was at night that I realized Duke was not used to sleeping in a dog bed. He would walk into my bedroom, put two paws on the bed and look at me with those big eyes.
“No, Duke, you sleep in the living room.”
I got him out of the living room and this time I closed the door. I heard a scratch on the door, and then a cry. I sighed and knew I was not going to be able to sleep like this. I opened the door again and there was Duke, wagging his tail. I allowed him in my bedroom. He again did that thing where he put two paws on the bed and would have those big eyes asking me if he could get on. I gestured that he could and he was so happy, snuggling up to me. I fell asleep cuddling Duke.
The next morning was a Monday morning and I unashamedly called in sick. I hardly ever called in sick and I felt like it was justified. I gave Duke his breakfast which he eagerly gobbled up. I got Duke, his toy, his new dog bed, and the leftover food and put it all in the car. I drove to the hospital and realized I hadn’t thought things through. Duke was obviously not allowed in the hospital and I didn’t want to leave him in the car. It was going to be a hot day, but this morning it was 70 (21 Celsius). I contemplated it for a while and then decided to ask someone at the reception desk.
Thankfully there was someone else at the desk, a young guy named John, who told me to bring Duke in. He promised to look after him while I got Chuck back, so we could reunite them. And so I did. I walked back to the room I knew Chuck was in and opened the door. Chuck was sitting on the bed with his back toward me. He was shirtless. He looked back at me.
“Hey”, he said.
“Hi”, I replied. “I’m here to pick you up.”
“You’re that guy from the park”.
I smiled.
“Yeah… we talked about this yesterday…”, I started.
Chuck looked away.
“I… I’m sorry, I don’t remember.”
“That’s OK, they gave you some painkillers.”
I felt like I was seeing a different personality to Chuck than I had seen the day before, but I guess that made sense if he was sedated.
“I asked you if it was OK if I looked after Duke and came to pick you up today.”
“Oh, Duke is all right?”
“He’s fine, he’s waiting for you by the entrance.”
Chuck’s face lit up.
“Really? Oh my gosh!”
I started walking toward him. All of a sudden I noticed he was sitting on the bed in just a black jockstrap.
“Uhmm”, he started, putting his hand up, “before you come any closer… I was still in gym clothes yesterday… and, well… I need some help getting dressed, I keep losing my balance.”
“No problem”, I said, “I’ll help.”
I noticed I had started salivating. I walked around the bed to wear Chuck was sitting. I saw his black shorts from yesterday on the floor, his grey tanktop was on the chair that I had sat on yesterday. I crouched beside him and opened the leg hole, so he could step into the shorts.
“Put your hand on my back to stabilize”, I said.
He did, stood up, and stepped into the shorts. We did the same thing for the other leg hole and I slipped the shorts up, only now realizing I had been face level with his dick. I was certain I saw he had a boner in the pouch of his jockstrap.
“Thank you”, he said.
“No problem”, I said. “The least I could do”.
“What do you mean?”, he asked.
I looked him in the eye. His big brown eyes looked right back and it reminded me of Duke.
“I… was the one who hit you in the head with the frisbee.”
“Oh gosh, really. Well, I did ask for that, didn’t I? I told you to throw it if Duke would bring it to you again.”
I smiled.
“That’s true.”
“Frisbees can be unpredictable!”, he said, putting his hands up.
I had by now noticed the dark hair on his chest, which looked incredibly attractive. He had a tight, flat stomach. He didn’t have a defined six-pack like Diego, but he clearly worked out. An extensive treasure trail lead down into the shorts. I got the tanktop from the chair and continued dressing him.
“Oh, thank you”, he said as I put it over his head.
Chuck said he would able to put on his socks and shoes by himself, but while doing so he admitted to feeling dizzy so I did that for him as well. He asked how Duke had been and I said he had looked a little sad. I also mentioned I didn’t want him to sleep in bed with me at first, but Duke insisted. Chuck laughed.
“Yeah, he doesn’t want to sleep alone. He would have been fine if you put the dog bed in the bedroom.”
“Ah. I had not figured that out.”
“I can’t believe you bought a dog bed for him though, that’s outrageous.”
“Well, he needed a place to sleep.”
“I will give you the money back for it.”
“No, there’s no need for that, I swear.”
By now we were walking down the hallway. Chuck didn’t need any support but he wasn’t walking too quickly. John spotted us coming and went behind the desk to fetch Duke. And by the time Chuck and I made it there, Duke came running toward him, wagging his tail, letting out little yelps of happiness.
“Awww”, John said out loud.
I thought it was quite touching to watch. Duke obviously hadn’t known what was going on with Chuck after he was taken away with the ambulance.
“Thank you so much, John”, I said.
“You’re welcome.”
Chuck, Duke, and I walked to my car and I asked Chuck where to go.
“Centreville. Marshall Crown Road.”
I started driving and asked Chuck how he felt now.
“Like, if I make any sudden movements I get dizzy, but the headache’s gone. And they said I can take the bandage off tomorrow, and I gotta come back next week so they can take out the stitches.”
“You got stitches?”
“Yeah, only three though.”
We chatted during the car ride. Chuck is an electrician and moved after an emotional break-up in Chicago.
“I needed a change of scenery. My best friend is a senator in DC, so I decided to move out here. And it’s been good. I miss the city sometimes, Chicago is what feels like home. But that’s because I haven’t really made any friends here yet.”
“Yeah, I’m sure that’ll happen with time.”
“Would you like to hang out some time? You’re a cool guy.”
I continued to look at the road as I drove. I smiled, and possibly blushed a little. I had to think of what Chuck had said while he was sedated and the boner he had had when I dressed him.
“Well… OK. You know when you were on those painkillers?”
“Yeah?”
“You said you wanted to go on a date with me.”
“Oh my gosh, seriously?”
“Yes.”
“That is so embarrassing. I’m sorry.”
We both laughed.
“Don’t worry about it”, I said.
“And… well… would you?”
“I’m actually sort of seeing someone recently… And I kinda wanna see how that works out.”
“OK… So what if we just hang out. No funny business, just a sports bar or something?”
“Sure, I can do that.”
“Cool. Thanks, man.”
We chatted some more and Chuck was asking me questions about myself. About my job, my family, where I lived, and all that sort of stuff. I realized I was telling him about growing up in Chantilly, things I had not yet told Diego. Diego hadn’t asked. It was probably because of the chemistry we had had that our conversations hadn’t really gotten so deep.
Chuck lived in an apartment building at the end of a cul-de-sac. It was quite a nice building with a little playground nearby.
“Well, this is me”, he said.
“Do you need any help with anything back home?”, I asked.
“I don’t think so. I’m good on groceries. But thanks. And thanks for everything.”
We hugged in the car and exchanged numbers.
“If you need anything, you let me know, all right?”
“I will, I promise.”, Chuck said as he smiled. His smile made my groin stir.
Chuck carried the dog bed and the bag of dog food into his building, as Duke carried his new toy. I waited until the door had closed behind them. Seeing Chuck’s ass walk away in those shorts was a sight to behold, especially knowing the jockstrap that was underneath. I got an erection. I was feeling the butterflies for Chuck just as much as I had felt them for Diego. I knew I was fucked. Because Diego and I had spent such an amazing night together, I felt like my feelings for him were stronger. But after a night at a sports bar with Chuck, I couldn’t be certain if that would still be the case. I checked my phone and saw Diego had texted back.
“Sorry for my late reply babe. I spent all of Sunday bragging about you to my friends and today to my co-workers. Hoping you’ll come by tonite for some of my big dick luvin’ xx”
I smiled. I texted back.
“Get that dick ready xx”
