Dustin, Chapter 1

Gustavo
22… 23… 24. I don’t know why, but ever since I had moved into this third floor apartment with my best friend Ailani, I would count the steps in my mind each time I got home from work. Today I was more ready than ever to get home. Phoenix, Arizona had seen record high temperatures. I had just seen in my car that it was 112 (44 degrees Celsius). And even the few outdoor steps from my air-conditioned car to my air-conditioned apartment were making me gush with sweat.

I opened the front door and I was more than ready to make a sharp left into my bedroom to take off my suit as fast as I could.
“Gus! Gus! Gus! Gus!”
I rolled my eyes. “…Yes?”
I could hear her running towards the hallway, most likely from the living room, which was probably about five steps, but Ailani didn’t have much physical condition, so she was already out of breath.
“There was… a U-HAUL… outside…”
“Oh, did someone move into 316?”
“Let me… finish…”
I stood there in silence, listening to Ailani gasp for breath, feeling sweat drop down my back.
“Three… shirtless men… carrying boxes…”
“Well, I like where this is going. Please let me get out of this first, by that time you’ll be breathing normally and I’ll be comfortable enough to listen.”
“OK…”

Not much later, I walked into the living room in a tank top and some shorts and to my left I saw Ailani making a mess of the kitchen.
“Is this you attempting to cook? Why not nachos like every night?”
“OK. So. Obviously I had to go over to 316 to meet the hunky shirtless men. So I had to offer them something. I made iced tea.”
“You made iced tea??”
“I made iced tea. I Googled how to and I made it.”
“Wow.”
“I know. And they loved it. So, there’s Dustin, Javier and Paul. And all I know is that Javier and Paul just moved here from Buenos Aires.”
“Latinos! Gay couple?”
“Not sure. Also don’t know if Dustin was just helping out or is moving into the second bedroom. I didn’t get all my questions answered, so I invited them to dinner and offered to cook.”
“Nooo!”
“Yeah. And they’ll be here in 30. So. Help. Please. Now.”
“For the love of Christ. At least one of them better be gay.”

Dustin
“Hi, I’m Gustavo”, I said as I shook hands.
“Dustin Hall, nice to meet you.” He had a polite, almost shy innocence about him, smiling a beautifully white smile. He had brown hair and some light scruff on his face. His green eyes looked right through me for a second, but then would quickly look down or away. Despite his natural innocence, the grey tanktop he wore showed off a mildly muscular chest and especially built arms. “You must be Ailani’s boyfriend?”
“No, we’re best friends from college.”
“Oh, cool!” I heard a Midwest accent. I estimated him in his mid-twenties, which made him at least five years younger than me. He was a classic boy next-door type of guy, which to me he now also literally was. I wasn’t sure if he seemed relieved Ailani and I weren’t together and if so, which of us he was interested in.
“Come in, come in, out of the heat,” I said as I let him step into the apartment.
“My name is Javi Garcia”, the next guy said in quite a heavy Latin American accent. He had a slightly darker skin tone, very short black hair and a slight beard. His eyes were a very dark brown and brooding. I could tell he was trying to figure out my ethnicity.
“I’m Gustavo. Bernardes. Brazilian.”
“Muito bom!”, he said enthusiastically as he shook my hand. “EspaƱol?”
“Un poco”, I smiled. Javi had a friendly smile that also lit up his eyes, which were a nice contrast to his dark features.
“Es mi novio, Paul”, Javi said as he made room for Paul to also shake my hand. Paul had slightly longer, black wavy hair and a lighter skin tone. He had some patches of facial hair and he wore glasses.
“Hi, I’m Paul Flores and I’m the boyfriend”, he said as we shook hands. Compared to Javi, Paul’s English seemed almost accent-free.
“So nice to meet you all, come in!”
So, definitely a gay couple. The first I knew of in this building. And fellow Latin Americans and around my age at that, thinking they were early to mid-thirties. I was thrilled!
“So, Ailani is still changing, she’ll be right out. Do you want anything to drink?”

Paul, Javi
It was a great night. All three guys were so lovely and had interesting stories to tell.
“When I graduated college, I didn’t really know what to do. I didn’t want to settle down yet and I quite randomly travelled to Buenos Aires. I worked in a coffeeshop, but soon enough set up my own. It was called #NoFilter Coffee.”
Ailani laughed way too hard.
“And Paul was studying history at the time and he became my employee. So that’s how we all know each other.”
“I’m so thankful for that job. Not because I can make a latte-art leaf, but Dustin indirectly taught me English”, Paul said.
“Yeah, it took me a while to get to the level of Spanish I’m at now”, Dustin laughed nervously.
“So why the move to Phoenix?” I wanted to know.
“Well, the three of us grew really close in the past few years. And only this past March, Dustin said he felt like a change of scenery. And it was actually Javi’s idea…”, Paul said as he looked at his boyfriend next to him.
“I… sushi chef.”
“Ohh!”, Ailani and I said at the same time.
“I have restaurant in Buenos Aires. But also wanted more. Bigger. Or, try. So, I say, Dustin, if you manage and I make sushi… We do restaurant in America!”
“I happened to find a place in Phoenix,” Dustin said.
“I applied for and got a job at Grand Canyon University,” Paul added. “And then we got this apartment, and we were on a plane!”, Paul said proudly.
“Oh wow, that’s really exciting!”, Ailani said.
“Very cool!” I said.
“So, once we’re settled in here, the real work begins”, Dustin said.
“And my job won’t start till after Summer break, so I’m not off the hook”, Paul smiled.
“We’re willing to help any way we can”, Ailani said.
We? I thought. But yeah, I was willing.
“You did say you’re a graphic designer, right?”, Dustin asked. “I’m keeping you in mind for a design for the name on the front and for the menus. If you don’t mind.”
“Oh cool!”, she said.
“What do you do, Gustavo?” Paul asked.
I sensed where this was going.
“I’m in social media advertising.”
A cheer went over the table. All three guys smiled and laughed.
“Is… destiny!”, Javi said.
“I’ll see what I can do for you guys.”
We toasted to the yet unnamed sushi place.

Of course, Ailani and I had to tell the story about how we met. We met when we were both at Arizona State in Tempe, but didn’t have classes together, met at a party, or were even in the same dorm. We just happened to both be paying our tuitions through modeling. And we were booked for this shoot where we had to pretend to be a couple on a picknick. We had so much fun on that shoot that we continued to hang out, became close friends and now even roommates.
“I’m not going to lie, I was disappointed when I found out he was gay”, Ailani said about me, “but I knew I needed to keep him in my life.”
A collective “Awww” followed.
“Is good to see. You both very pretty”, Javi said. He pointed at me when he said “And you very tall.” I was easily the tallest at the table with my 6’’ (180 cm).
I had always cared about how I looked and took care of myself. I regularly go to the gym and like to wear nice clothes. Ailani by contrast had plenty of days where she didn’t shower. She usually wore old T-shirts and sweat shorts. She would eat nachos for dinner almost every day and barely exercised. But her Hawaiian heritage, her gorgeous facial features and fast metabolism were more than enough to make her a beautiful woman. Tonight she had made an effort, wearing a short, summery dress and quickly washing her hair while I prepared dinner. I noticed she often touched Dustin on the shoulder. I could tell it helped Dustin loosen up, becoming less shy. He would look at her during most of the stories he told. But would a straight guy really move in with a gay couple?

The guys left around 10:00. While I did the dishes, Ailani couldn’t stop talking about all of them.
“Finally we have neighbors who aren’t boring!”
“I know! And…”
“Good-looking.”
“And…”
“Gay?”
“Dustin is into you? I think?”
“You noticed it too?!” Ailani gasped. “I was so scared he might be gay too.”
“I’m not sure yet either way, but tonight it looked like he liked you.”
“Score!”
At a level, I was jealous. He was beautiful and so cute.

Ailani and I had discussed moving to an apartment in the center of Phoenix. The apartment we were in was what we could afford when we left college. But it was quite far out and a bit of a boring neighborhood. Neither of us liked moving though, so we put it off. Now I was thankful that we did.

I woke up early the next morning. It was a Saturday. I figured I’d go to the gym and go to the store for some food. And I wanted to get it over with fast before it got too hot. In the early morning it was only 88 (31 degrees Celsius), but I saw on my phone that a 115 high (46 Celsius) was predicted. I quickly had a coffee, some fruit and made a protein shake. I packed my gym bag and thought of something.

Paul, Javi
Before I headed out, I quickly knocked on the door of 316. It was before 8 AM, so I hoped I didn’t wake them. But Paul opened the door in blue designer boxer briefs. His alabaster skin was hairless. He had a really nice muscular body, even though he wasn’t my type at all.
“Hey”, I said. Paul didn’t hesitate and gave me a hug.
“Hey! I had so much fun last night!”
“Me too!”
“Come in!”
I actually just wanted to ask a quick question, but I was curious how their apartment looked. And maybe Dustin was also there, in his underwear.
“We were just having breakfast”, Paul said.
Their apartment was mirrored to ours. There were still some boxes laying around. Two by an empty bookcase and at least three in the kitchen. But there was a table and chairs, a sofa and a TV. The TV had Spanish language news on, and the sofa had Javi, also in his underwear. Javi wore boxer briefs from the same brand but in yellow. He got up to give me a hug and my eyes quickly glanced down his built body because I saw the outline of his massive, thick cock, which was positioned to the side.
“Gustavo!”, he said enthusiastically and he grabbed me close. I felt his cock on my thigh.
“Hey Javi!”, I said, pretending I didn’t notice. “Did you have fun last night?”
“Yes! Cool neighbors! So happy!”, he said when he let go.
“Do you want anything?”, Paul asked.
“No, I was just heading out to the gym and the store. Was wondering if you wanted me to bring anything.”
“We’re good, I think”, Paul responded. He and Javi sat down in the way I presume they were also sitting before I came in. Both sideways on the sofa, Paul leaning back against Javi’s bare, hairy chest. Javi sipped from a coffee, Paul was finishing his bowl of cereal.
“You not sitting down?”, Javi then asked.
“Nah, I’d rather get my errands over with before it gets too hot. But maybe we could hang out tonight?”
“Saturday night!”, Javi said.
“Yes! Show us the cool places!”, Paul seemed excited.
“That sounds like fun”, I said. “I’ll check if Ailani wants to come.”
“Dustin will want, too”.
“Cool! Ready to leave here at 10?” I was excited to hang out with these guys again.
“Perfect!”

That day I worked out harder than usual to look my best that night. I picked out an outfit that brought out my eyes and arms. Ailani had suggested we bring the guys to Karamba, a gay Latin nightclub. We had been there before and we loved the music they played. Even Ailani was ready to go at 10:00, so we knocked on our brand new neighbors’ door and they were practically good to go as well. Dustin wore a loose white tanktop and jeans that hugged his cute butt. Javi looked more formal in a black button down shirt, but he had left at least the top half of the buttons open. Paul wore a simple blue T-shirt and some light blue jeans. We took two taxis and once we got there, Paul and Javi’s faces lit up. Javi told Paul something in Spanish I didn’t catch. Paul turned around and told me, “just like home!”.
Javi pointed up, smiled at Paul, and moved his head to the music, clearly recognizing it. It was a song in Spanish I didn’t know, but sounded good. He seemed really happy. Javi was immediately off to the dancefloor.
“Start with shots!”, Paul suggested.
Dustin paid for five shots and we carried them to the dancefloor to give one to Javi. We clinked the little glasses and we all downed it in one. It was a great night, I danced so hard. Usually I would look around if I saw anyone I liked and cruise at least a bit. But I realized I was only focusing on Dustin. He seemed to have a good time. He wasn’t the best dancer but got better after a few drinks. He was the only Caucasian man there, but he didn’t seem bothered by that at all. His loose tanktop caused him to nipslip a few times. Part of me wanted to go up to him and ask if he saw anyone he liked, just to find out his orientation. But I didn’t.

Javi was asking everyone what they wanted to drink and asked Dustin to come to the bar with him. Ailani went to the bathroom, leaving me alone with Paul.
“Can I ask you a question? Is Dustin straight?”
“Good question. I don’t know how exactly he identifies. You’re better off asking him yourself.”
Not helpful.
“Not one for gossip, then?”
Paul laughed.
“He is single though, right?”
“Yes.”
“Should we talk to someone for him? I know a few guys here.”
“I don’t think he would like that.”
I wasn’t getting anything from Paul. Javi and Dustin came back with our drinks, so the conversation was over. But I wasn’t done trying.

Not much later, Dustin walked over to me and Ailani and put his arms around both of us.
“I’m so happy you’re my new neighbors”, he said and he gave us both a kiss on the cheek.
Soon enough Javi and Paul made it into a group hug.

At one point during the night, it was my turn to buy everyone a drink. Javi put his hand on the small of my back and said, “I’ll help”.
We walked to the bar. Javi seemed a little drunk. His shirt was now fully open. I was desperate to try again and had a feeling I’d have a better shot with Javi.
“So, Javi. Is Dustin gay also?”
He had to think for a bit and then shook his head no.
“He had girlfriend in Buenos Aires. She… kinky. Fuck him with strap-on. He like. A lot. He tell me.”
I hadn’t even ordered and I already got so much more information from Javi than from Paul.
“Relationship end. Break up. Dustin want to get fucked more and more. He have… threesome?”
He looked at me, wondering if he used the right word. I just nodded.
“… with me and Paul. I fuck him. He really like. I saw.”
“Oh wow”, was all I could utter.
“So I think Dustin straight guy, but like to get fucked.”
“OK. Thanks.”
I honestly didn’t know how to respond.
“You like Dustin?”
“Ailani likes him”, which wasn’t technically a lie. “And I wondered”, I said.
“Dustin like… you know, exotic, petite girl.”
“Really?”
Javi nodded heavily.
It wasn’t a closed deal, but the odds were in favor of Ailani on this one.

I woke up the next morning and felt like lying in. I didn’t have a hangover, but my body preferred to not move for at least another hour. I had had a great time the night before at Karamba. All three of the guys were great. Dustin had been so cute, dancing, laughing, and getting a bit tipsy. I remembered getting in the taxi, but I didn’t remember getting to bed. I was still wearing my black briefs. Normally I would sleep naked. But for now I left them on, as I snoozed a little bit longer.

I woke up again with a dry mouth. I decided to go to the kitchen for some ice water. I wandered into the living room, then the kitchen and got a glass from the cabinet. I opened the fridge, but behind me I heard a door open. I turned around. It was Dustin. Coming from Ailani’s bedroom. He wore white Calvin Klein briefs. He smiled shyly and giggled nervously.
“Oh. Hi”, he said. “Good morning.”
